Discover Kyoto Charcoal Eel Suisen Gion Yasaka

Kyoto Charcoal Eel Suisen Gion Yasaka offers a truly authentic dining experience in the heart of Kyoto, Japan. Located in the picturesque Higashiyama ward at 467 Maruyamacho, this charming restaurant specializes in charcoal-grilled eel, a dish known for its rich flavor and tender texture. Whether you're a local or a visitor exploring the historical city of Kyoto, a visit to this spot is sure to be a memorable one.

From the moment you step inside Kyoto Charcoal Eel Suisen Gion Yasaka, you’ll be greeted with the warm ambiance of traditional Japanese decor. The atmosphere is peaceful and serene, with the gentle aroma of charcoal grilling filling the air. It’s a perfect setting for a relaxed dining experience, allowing you to fully appreciate the craftsmanship that goes into each dish.

The main highlight of the menu is undoubtedly the charcoal-grilled eel, prepared with the utmost care and expertise. Each eel is sourced fresh, then grilled over a bed of hot coals, allowing the natural flavors to develop and intensify. The technique used here ensures that the eel remains perfectly tender on the inside while developing a crispy, savory exterior that perfectly balances the delicate fish flavor. The eel is served in a variety of ways, from simple donburi (rice bowls) to more elaborate platters, providing options for every taste preference.

A unique feature of the restaurant is the careful attention paid to the sauce that accompanies the eel. The tare sauce is a secret family recipe, blending soy sauce, mirin, and other carefully selected ingredients. This sauce is brushed onto the eel as it grills, adding depth and complexity to each bite. Whether you prefer a lighter or stronger flavor, the eel’s taste is consistently well-rounded and rich, making each dish truly satisfying.

For those unfamiliar with eel, the staff at Kyoto Charcoal Eel Suisen Gion Yasaka is more than happy to guide you through the menu and offer recommendations. The restaurant’s commitment to customer experience shines through in their knowledgeable and friendly service. They take the time to ensure that each diner feels welcomed and enjoys their meal in a relaxed, unhurried environment.

The restaurant also offers a selection of side dishes that complement the main course. Items such as miso soup, pickled vegetables, and steamed rice are prepared with the same attention to detail as the eel itself. Each side dish is carefully crafted to bring out the best in the main course, making for a well-rounded and fulfilling meal.

Beyond the food, Kyoto Charcoal Eel Suisen Gion Yasaka also provides a wonderful glimpse into Kyoto’s rich culinary tradition. Located near the iconic Yasaka Shrine, the restaurant is an ideal stop for those exploring the historic sites of Gion. The area itself is renowned for its beautiful streets lined with traditional wooden machiya houses, tea shops, and temples, offering a picturesque backdrop for a meal. Whether you're visiting during the vibrant cherry blossom season or the quieter months, the location is perfect for a relaxing break during your day of sightseeing.

Customer reviews consistently praise the quality of the food and the impeccable service at this Kyoto gem. Many return for the chance to enjoy the eel, with some noting that the restaurant’s unique grilling method results in a taste and texture unlike anything they’ve had elsewhere. Visitors from around the world rave about the authenticity of the experience, calling it a must-visit for any food lover traveling through Kyoto.

For those looking to enjoy Kyoto Charcoal Eel Suisen Gion Yasaka, reservations are recommended, especially during peak dining hours. While the restaurant is relatively small, its cozy interior ensures an intimate dining experience. • Excellent unagi! We also tried the Wagyu beef bowl which was also delicious. The side dishes paired incredibly well with our entrees. The unagi with a cold cup of draft beer was the perfect way to end our day!! Can’t wait to come back on our next trip

  • Lovely dining experience after a long hike around the Kyoto temple area. The store is very foreigner friendly, with a small curate menu available in English. Staff also spoke English well after my poor attempts at Japanese haha. Food came out very quickly and was delicious.

  • Excellent eel and wagyu. Lovely view and very peaceful restaurant. It is quite busy so grab a reservation if you can. They will take walk ins but timing depends on how many people are here. Portions are quite large. We had the wagyu and grilled eel bowl/box

  • We got the deluxe box with one eel. It was definitely enough food for two. Came with sides of soup, pickled radish, fresh wasabi, and pickled cucumber and eel, as well as complimentary tea. Staff was very polite and attentive. Restaurant is nestled between tall trees and has amazing natural views from the windows. Very calming atmosphere. Food is a little pricey, 7000 yen ($45), for the meal, but the atmosphere and scenery almost made up for it.

  • I honestly loved the aesthetic of this restaurant. Would definitely recommend coming here at daytime during fall season. The view even at night is beautiful. The food and atmosphere were spectacular. My friend and I made a last minute booking the same day before heading straight to this place looking to eat some eel before leaving Kyoto. We did not regret our decision!

  • Eel was chewier than I remember it being and less nuanced. Presentation was stellar. Great service! You’re greeted with hot tea. Ask for a space overlook the park. No reservation needed for Sunday lunch. We arrived when they opened at 11a. It’s beautiful!

  • I didn’t really like eel before, but now I’ve come to enjoy it. It’s so delicious! I even regret ordering the small size. The green tea shaved ice is also a must. It’s not too sweet, and it’s perfect for finishing the meal in a refreshing way.

  • Excellent location, very easy to find near Yasaka Shrine. Charcoal grilled eel is delicious. We ordered the Deluxe meal that comes with one full eel with tail, two sides and one bowl of soup. The set also comes with wasabi to enhance the flavour. Service was very fast, do come early before dinner crowd arrives.
